In the Indian state of Kerala, a violent mob attacked a police station and injured 36 police officers

KERALA: A mob attacked a police station in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Sunday night, injuring 36 police officers, after months of protests over a planned port turned violent.

The port is operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, owned by Asia’s richest man, Gautam Adani. Protesters, mainly local fishermen, say the $900m (£744m) project is causing coastal erosion and destroying their livelihoods.

The company denied the allegations. The protests have been going on for over a hundred days but have been largely peaceful so far. Many protesters say their homes have been destroyed by coastal erosion, forcing them to live in temporary shelters. However, the company said that the project is in line with environmental laws and that the flooding is due to climate change.

Last week, the Kerala high court said the protesters must comply with its earlier order to allow “unhindered entry and exit” from the project site.
