Independent Candidates Clinch 40 Seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa LG By-Elections

PESHAWAR: Independent candidates have won 40 out of 72 seats in the local government by-elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), according to the unofficial results. The by-elections encompassed 72 seats across diverse categories of Village Councils and Neighborhood Councils, including General Council, Women, Youth, and Peasants/Worker, in 21 districts of KP.

While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party secured victory in 14 seats, other parties also made their mark. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) won 6 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) secured 5 seats, Awami National Party (ANP) clinched 4 seats, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) gained 2 seats, and Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) secured 1 seat.

The elections were held to fill positions that had fallen vacant in village and neighborhood councils across the designated districts, including Peshawar, Noshera, Charsaddah, Khyber, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Swat, Shangla, Malakand, Dir Upper, Dir Lower, and Bajaur.

A total of 256 polling stations were set up in these districts to facilitate approximately 385,835 registered voters. Out of these, 159 polling stations were identified as the most sensitive, with an additional 84 polling stations deemed sensitive due to security concerns.

The by-elections were conducted under tight security measures, ensuring the safety of both voters and polling staff. The final results are awaited to provide a comprehensive overview of the distribution of seats among political parties in these by-elections.
