CHENNAI: India emerged victorious against Australia in their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2023, showcasing a remarkable comeback after an initial setback. Chasing an easy target of 200, India faced a daunting situation at two for three in the early overs of the inning, but Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) joined forces, constructing a resilient 165-run partnership that guided India to a six-wicket win with 52 balls to spare.

Earlier in the day, India’s bowlers, particularly the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin, displayed exceptional skills, restricting the five-time champions Australia to 199 all out in 49.3 overs. Jadeja (3 wickets for 28 runs) and Yadav (2 wickets for 42 runs) dismantled the Australian batting order, well-supported by pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (2 wickets for 35 runs) and Ashwin (1 wicket for 34 runs).

Winning the toss, Australia chose to bat, but India’s bowlers applied relentless pressure, making it challenging for the Australian batters to settle in. Despite efforts from Steven Smith (46 off 71 balls) and opener David Warner (41 off 52 balls), India’s spinners picked crucial wickets at regular intervals, preventing Australia from establishing substantial partnerships.

In response, India’s top order struggled initially, losing three wickets with only two runs on the board. However, the partnership between Kohli and Rahul turned the tide in India’s favor. Kohli’s composed 85 and Rahul’s unbeaten 97 anchored India’s chase, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination under pressure.
