NEW DELHI: India’s extremist organization RSS Joint General Secretary on Saturday admitted that the situation in violence-hit Manipur is troublesome.

Earlier on September 8, in a tragic turn of events, Indian security forces in Manipur resorted to tear gas and gunfire to disperse a gathering of approximately 500 individuals. The incident resulted in the loss of one life and left 20 others wounded, police said. A police official revealed that a few paramilitary personnel also sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Further complicating the situation, reports indicated that groups of armed individuals engaged in clashes with security forces in other regions of Manipur. Since the eruption of conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities over the distribution of economic benefits and quotas, Manipur has witnessed a surge in violence, leading to more than 200 casualties and the displacement of thousands of residents.

On September 4, a group of nearly 20 independent United Nations human rights experts, including the Special Rapporteurs on violence against women and girls and torture, issued a condemnation, expressing serious concerns about the “slow and inadequate response” by Narendra Modi-led Indian government, including law enforcement agencies, in addressing reported rights violations, including sexual violence and hate speech, during deadly ethnic clashes in the remote northeastern state of Manipur.

The world is also in extreme anger and a strong feeling of unhappiness after a mob paraded naked two women in the violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur in July. The police said they had opened a case of gang rape and had arrested a man after a video showed two women being paraded naked by a mob.
