SRINAGAR: In a development that has sparked controversy, the Modi government’s directive to observe Independence Day celebrations in Kashmir has drawn attention to its implications on the local populace’s perspective towards India’s presence in the region.

The directive instructs government employees and Kashmiri residents to hoist the Indian flag atop their homes in honour of the upcoming August 15 Independence Day festivities.

The Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) released an official statement emphasizing that all government officials and employees within the Education Department are expected to raise the Tricolour flag above their residences while adhering to the prescribed guidelines outlined in the flag code. Additionally, the announcement outlined a mandatory requirement for all employees to actively participate in the Independence Day celebrations, preventing them from taking leave on August 15, 2023.

The government’s directive also extends to public buildings and institutions, including schools, which are urged to be adorned with illuminations and the National Flag, with strict observance of the flag code. The directive further mandates the sharing of videos depicting the decorations and flag hoisting with the respective Divisional Commissioner.

Furthermore, the statement instructs government officials and Education Department staff to change their social media display pictures to feature selfies alongside images of the Tricolor flag, Mitti (symbolizing earth), and Diya (earthen lamp). This move aims to symbolize their alignment with the spirit of Independence Day and national unity.

However, this directive has drawn criticism due to its potential impact on the sentiments of Kashmiri people who view India’s presence in the region as an unlawful occupation. Some locals perceive the flag hoisting as a symbolic endorsement of Indian control over the region, contrary to their aspirations for autonomy or independence. The directive’s requirement for active participation in the celebrations and social media displays has raised concerns about compelled expressions of loyalty.

As the region has a history of complex political and social dynamics, any policy related to Independence Day celebrations can carry significant symbolism. The government’s intent to foster a sense of national unity and patriotism may inadvertently deepen existing divides and tensions.
