GREATER NOIDA, India: India is set to host its inaugural MotoGP race this Sunday, marking a thrilling entry for the premier motorcycling championship into the world’s most populous country.

The event is poised to tap into a burgeoning fan base and capitalize on India’s passion for two-wheelers.

With over half of all Indian households owning a motorbike or scooter, it’s no surprise that two-wheelers dominate the nation’s petrol-powered transport landscape. This fervor for motorbikes, particularly high-performance models, has created a burgeoning market.

More than a million motorbikes in the 250cc-plus category are sold annually in India, indicating that many are purchasing these bikes for excitement, adventure, and leisure, in addition to transportation. This shift in consumer behaviour presents a golden opportunity for MotoGP to establish itself as a significant sport in the country.

Vaibhav Sinha, CEO of Indian MotoGP promoters Fairstreet Sports, expressed optimism about the sport’s prospects in India, saying, “We intend to tap this potential to make biking a very big sport in our country.”

However, there have been concerns raised about the safety of the Buddh International Circuit, where the race will be held. Some riders have voiced worries about the proximity of walls to the track.

Despite these challenges, the MotoGP event represents a crucial step for the sport in India, a nation with the world’s fifth-largest economy. Carlos Ezpeleta, Dorna Sports’ Chief Sporting Officer, highlighted India’s significance for MotoGP’s growth: “Breaking into India, which is a whole continent in itself, is very important… It’s the biggest two-wheeler market in the world and very important for us, our stakeholders, and the manufacturers.”

The Buddh International Circuit, formerly the home of the Indian Formula One Grand Prix, serves as the venue for the MotoGP race. While India hosted Formula One from 2011 to 2013, the event faced numerous setbacks, including financial and bureaucratic issues and declining attendance. MotoGP organizers are striving to avoid similar pitfalls.

The Indian MotoGP promises the thrilling spectacle of roaring engines and burning rubber, with tens of thousands of fans expected to flock to the circuit. The action-packed weekend includes practice sessions, qualifying races, and a sprint race on Saturday, culminating in the grand race on Sunday.

As India marks its debut on the MotoGP calendar, motorsport enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike eagerly await the roar of engines and the adrenaline rush that only premier motorcycle racing can deliver. With its vast audience of two-wheel aficionados, India presents a tantalizing opportunity for MotoGP to become a roaring success in the subcontinent.
