NEW DELHI: India has test-fired a ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads for the first time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday. The missile is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of the Agni-5 missile with MIRV technology in a statement on social media platform X.
MIRV technology enables the Agni-5 missile to carry multiple nuclear warheads simultaneously, allowing for the capability to target and strike multiple locations independently.
While Prime Minister Modi did not provide detailed information about the test, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been at the forefront of developing the Agni series of missiles.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that India has now joined the select group of nations possessing this advanced missile technology.
