NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, serving as the host for this year’s G20 summit, declared on Saturday that the body had reached a consensus on the leaders’ declaration and formally announced its adoption.

“Because of our team’s hard work, and with your support, there is a consensus on the New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit declaration,” Prime Minister Modi stated, adding, “I announce the consensus adoption of the G20 declaration,” as he symbolically struck a ceremonial gavel to mark the significant occasion.

While the announcement of the adoption was made, the specific details and contents of the joint communique are yet to be revealed, leaving the global community eagerly awaiting insights into the agreements reached among the world’s most influential economies and nations.

Challenges for G20 Leader’s Summit

In recent years, achieving consensus among G20 member nations has become increasingly challenging, with significant divisions emerging over issues such as Russia’s conflict in Ukraine and the contentious debate on financing strategies to combat climate change.

Despite these challenges, Amitabh Kant, a prominent Indian civil servant and a key organizer of the New Delhi summit, expressed optimism about the proceedings. He emphasized that Saturday’s discussions marked the most “ambitious” year in the history of the G20, highlighting that substantive work had more than doubled compared to previous presidencies.
