NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to the leaders of the G20 nations, suggesting that the African Union (AU) be granted full and permanent membership in the diplomatic group at its upcoming summit in India, according to an official source.

The proposal reflects India’s dedication to strengthening Africa’s representation and partnership in shaping global affairs, the source stated. By advocating for the AU’s inclusion in the G20, Prime Minister Modi aims to promote a more just, equitable, and inclusive global architecture and governance.

The G20 is an intergovernmental forum that brings together the world’s major developed and developing economies. Its members account for approximately 85% of global GDP, over 75% of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world’s population. The group consists of 19 countries and the European Union, and this year, it extended invitations to nine non-member “guest” countries, including Bangladesh, Singapore, Spain, and Nigeria. Additionally, international organizations such as the United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, and IMF are also part of the G20.

The AU, comprised of 55 member states, is a continental body representing the interests of African nations. Prime Minister Modi’s proposal aligns with his belief in providing a greater voice to countries from the Global South on international platforms, particularly those from Africa.

India assumed the presidency of the G20 in December of the previous year and is slated to host the summit later in the year.
