KERALA: A transgender couple in the southern Indian state of Kerala, whose pregnancy photos went viral globally, has formally welcomed their first baby.
Ziya Paval shared the news on Instagram, saying her partner Zahad gave birth to the baby on Wednesday morning.
Zahad also posted a photo of the baby, born nearly a month premature. The couple told the media that both Zahad and the baby, whose name and gender they have not disclosed, were fine.
Paval and Zahad said it was their dream to become parents.
Zahad underwent breast removal surgery and heavy hormone treatment for uterus removal to become a man. However, Zahad postponed the therapy during the pregnancy and opted to become a mother.
Zahad, who uses only one name and works as an accountant, said she planned to return to his job after two months and Paval will take care of the baby.
Couple undergoing gender transition
The couple was at different stages of their respective gender transition processes when they decided to have a baby one-and-a-half years ago.
The two then paused their hormone therapy on the doctor’s advice.
Since the baby’s birth announcement, netizens have been congratulating the couple on their social media pages.
