JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo has dubbed Wednesday’s assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh “murder”. In a statement, he said that that was violence, a murder that is intolerable, and occurred in Iran.  He added, “I suppose all, including Indonesia, strongly denounce violence and murder like that,”. Hamas has accused Israel of conducting the strike on Ismail Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran.

Earlier, many countries including Pakistan, China, Russia, Turkey and Qatar condemned the Hamas leader’s assassination in Tehran.

Pakistan’s state-run news agency (APP) cited Foreign Office Spokesperson as saying that Islamabad denounced the assassination of the chief of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, expressing deep concern over the increasing Israeli adventurism in the region.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday denounced Israeli strikes on Beirut and Tehran as a “dangerous escalation,”.  Qatar and Egypt, which have played key roles as mediators in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, warned on Wednesday that the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh could significantly damage efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.  Both nations highlighted how the recent escalation threatens to derail peace negotiations and exacerbate regional tensions.
