JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Mount Ibu volcano erupted on Tuesday, throwing thick columns of grey ash five kilometers up in the sky, the volcanology agency reported.

There are no immediate reports of evacuations due to the volcanic eruption.

The volcano on the remote island of Halmahera erupted at 5:36 a.m. local time for about two minutes, said Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, an official of the PVMB agency.

After the eruption, all activities were barred within seven kilometers of the crater.

Heruningtyas added the volcano is active because there is intense magma activity, He added that the alert status of Mount Ibu was at the highest level.

Clouds of grey smoke and ash can be seen high into the sky from the crater in video images shared by the agency, PVMB, after a smaller eruption on Monday.

The BNPB disaster agency said they are the latest in a series since May that forced authorities to evacuate seven villages in the area, although there are no new evacuations.
