JAKARTA: Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto will set off on his first official foreign tour next month, with key stops in China and the United States, local media reported on Tuesday, as the new leader seeks a more prominent position for Indonesia on the world stage, AFP reported.
Local newspaper Kompas reported on Tuesday that the former general, inaugurated on October 20, will uphold Jakarta’s longstanding non-aligned foreign policy while advancing Indonesia’s international influence.
According to Kompas, Prabowo’s trip will include visits to five countries: China, the United States, Peru, Brazil, and Britain. Sources from the presidential palace revealed that he will begin his tour in Beijing on November 8, where he is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.
Following his visit to China, Prabowo will travel to Washington, D.C., for a meeting with US President Joe Biden, although the exact date of the US visit has not yet been disclosed.
Prabowo’s Washington visit comes just days after the November 5 US election, where incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris is set to face off against former President Donald Trump.
Following his US visit, Prabowo will head to Peru to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Lima, where he is expected to meet with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte. Afterward, he will proceed to the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a gathering of global leaders to address pressing international issues.
The Indonesian president’s diplomatic tour will conclude in the United Kingdom, where he is expected to meet King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This final stop underlines Prabowo’s intention to strengthen bilateral relations across continents, in line with his foreign policy goals to foster cooperation and enhance Indonesia’s global standing.
