BEIRUT, Lebanon: The Israeli army has intensified its military operations, launching a ground offensive in Lebanon as tensions escalate following a week of air strikes that have reportedly resulted in hundreds of casualties.
The offensive began amid international calls for restraint, as Israel aimed to target Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant underscored that the conflict is far from over, especially after the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a recent airstrike, which has significantly weakened the Iran-backed group.
The Israeli military’s operation involved targeted ground raids, supported by air strikes and artillery, aimed at what they described as “immediate threats” to northern Israeli communities. Army spokesman Avichay Adraee warned Lebanese civilians to avoid travel in the southern border area for their safety. The military has designated parts of the border as a military zone, further heightening tensions.

Casualties in the region continue to rise, with recent reports indicating that Israeli air strikes on Palestinian camps in Lebanon have killed multiple individuals, including members of the Fatah group. Additionally, Israel’s bombardment has extended to Syria, where air defence systems intercepted strikes in Damascus, resulting in civilian casualties.
Despite the ongoing military actions, U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed support for Israel’s efforts to dismantle attack infrastructure along the border. However, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and other world leaders have urged de-escalation, fearing the potential for a broader regional conflict.
As the situation develops, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has called for international aid for the growing number of displaced individuals, with estimates suggesting that up to one million people may be affected by the conflict. The humanitarian crisis is further exacerbated by the ongoing violence in Gaza, where Israeli air strikes have also led to significant civilian casualties, raising urgent calls for intervention and support for affected communities.
