NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres marked the International Day of Democracy by emphasizing the critical role young people play in upholding democratic principles and the need to empower them with education and skills.

Guterres highlighted the importance of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights in promoting freedom, sustainable development, and human dignity. He expressed concerns about the shrinking civic space and the harmful impact of misinformation and disinformation on public discourse and trust in institutions.

This year’s theme, “Empowering the Next Generation,” underscored the vital role of children and young individuals in safeguarding and advancing democracy. Guterres stressed that simply listening to young voices is insufficient; substantial investments in education, skills development, lifelong learning, and the protection of human rights and gender equality are essential.

The Secretary-General called for unity across generations and urged collective efforts to build a more just and equitable world. The International Day of Democracy, observed annually on September 15, provides an opportunity to assess the state of democracy globally.

Democracy as Universal Value

Established in 2007 by the UN General Assembly, it reaffirms democracy as a universal value rooted in people’s freely expressed will to determine their political, economic, social, and cultural systems and participate fully in all aspects of life.

On the same day, UN human rights experts highlighted the connection between the digital world and fundamental democratic rights, urging states to protect these rights in cyberspace. Special rapporteurs on freedom of expression, the situation of rights defenders, and freedom of peaceful assembly warned against the misuse of evolving technology to limit human rights, curtail civic space, and target activists. They emphasized that digital space is not neutral and that human rights principles should guide its development.

In conclusion, the experts reiterated that human rights should be a primary consideration in discussions about the present and future of technology and the internet, emphasizing their central role in shaping the digital landscape.

The International Day of Democracy serves as a reminder of the global commitment to democratic values and the need to adapt them to the challenges of the digital age.
