LAHORE: The 8th death anniversary of esteemed Urdu writer Intizar Hussain is being observed today, local media reported. Born in India in 1925, Hussain gained widespread acclaim for his contributions to literature encompassing novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction. After studying Urdu literature at a university in Meerut, India, he shifted to Lahore.
Hussain’s novel “Basti” published in 1979 gathered significant attention, being shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2013 following its translation. Hussain worked as journalist throughout his life, regularly contributing columns to prominent newspapers in the country.
Intizar Hussain received several national and global awards including Sitara-i-Imtiaz from the government of Pakistan. Intizar Hussain passed away on February 2, 2016, in Lahore.
