LONDON: International Muslim History Month kicked off, serving as an opportunity to appreciate and learn the contributions of Muslims throughout history.

Organizers said that IMHM, which begins on 1 May every year and is recently marking its third year, is the month-long celebration of the rich and diverse history of the world Muslim community.

New York-based World Hijab Day Organization said that“IMHM is a significant opportunity for us to reflect on the several contributions made by Muslims around the globe and appreciate their impact on our shared history,”

It added: This year’s theme is #GetToKnowMuslims, and “it emphasises the significance of learning about the contributions of Muslims history and how it can help us celebrate the diversity and richness of our international community.”

WHD, which launched World Hijab Day in 2013, called on citizens to commemorate the month by sharing their solidarity poster and joining the conversations on social media to “dismantle Islamophobia and promote diversity by learning about our fellow humans.”

The organization said that New York has recognized IMHM since 2021, highlighting “the importance of this event, as it provides the opportunity to combat Islamophobia by raising awareness and appreciation of the incredible accomplishments of Muslim women and men throughout history.”

The New York State Senate said: “World Muslim History Month was established to well educate Muslims of New York and around the globe of authentic Islamic history, the personalities, the events and the contributions which changed society, in the hope all Muslims can bridge their ties with their non-Muslim neighbours through education and understanding.”
