TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, has expressed approval of the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution 2720, which calls for the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. However, Kanaani emphasized that the resolution, while a positive step, falls short of meeting the urgent needs of Palestinians in the besieged territory.
In a statement, Kanaani stated, “It is highly regrettable that 77 days into the Zionist regime’s lunatic strikes on defenseless people in Gaza, the US government still blocks the passage of a binding resolution at the United Nations Security Council to stop the war and put an end to the Zionist regime’s war crimes and genocide in Gaza.”
He highlighted the challenging conditions in Gaza, noting that effective humanitarian aid delivery is practically impossible amid ongoing bombardments and military attacks by the Zionist regime. Kanaani asserted that more than 60 percent of homes and essential infrastructure in Gaza have been destroyed, constituting unprecedented war crimes in contemporary history.
Iran Says UN Security Council Still Bears Responsibilities
While acknowledging the approval of the resolution, Kanaani asserted that the UN Security Council still bears responsibilities, and he placed the primary responsibility for the continuation of Israeli attacks on the US government. He stated, “The approval of this resolution does not lessen the UN Security Council’s responsibilities, and the US government remains the one that is mainly responsible for the continuation of the Israeli regime’s brutal attacks and war crimes against Palestinian citizens in Gaza and the West Bank in Palestine.”
The UN Security Council adopted the resolution with a 13-0 vote, with both the United States and Russia abstaining. The resolution calls for the acceleration of aid deliveries to Palestinian civilians in Gaza but does not include direct calls for a ceasefire or the suspension of hostilities between Israel and Hamas.
