TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have announced the arrest of 12 persons accused of collaborating with Israel, the country’s long-standing enemy, Iranian media reported on Sunday.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that the arrests took place across six provinces in the Islamic Republic.

According to the Fars news agency, which cited the IRGC, the suspects were apprehended while allegedly plotting actions that could jeopardize Iran’s security. However, the report did not specify the exact dates or locations of the arrests.

The Iranian government regularly accuses Israel of orchestrating sabotage operations against its nuclear facilities and of being involved in the assassinations of Iranian scientists.

In December, Iran executed a man convicted of colluding with Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, highlighting the severe penalties faced by those accused of espionage. The previous year, four other persons were also hanged for their alleged collaboration with Israeli forces.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have heightened recently, especially following a July strike attributed to Israel, which killed Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of the Palestinian group Hamas.
