TEHRAN: Tehran has condemned the US air strikes on Iraq and Syria, denouncing them as a “strategic mistake” that will only escalate tensions and instability in the region. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, labeled the attacks as an “adventurous action” by the US government, questioning its consequences and impact.
Kanani stated, “The US military attacks on Iraq, Syria, and Yemen merely provide for the goals of the Zionist regime,” referring to the close ties between the United States and its ally, Israel. He emphasized that the airstrikes violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq and Syria, in addition to being a breach of international law and a blatant violation of the United Nations charter.
US Airstrikes on Iraq and Syria
The United States launched the airstrikes on Friday in retaliation for a drone attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan. President Joe Biden has pledged more strikes. The US military targeted a total of 85 locations across seven different sites in Iraq and Syria.
Reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicate that at least 18 fighters were killed in Syria, while the Iraqi government reported 16 casualties, including civilians. The strikes have sparked concerns about the potential for further escalation in the already volatile region.
In addition to the situation in Iraq and Syria, the US military has been conducting airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi group in response to attacks on international shipping. The Houthis claim they are targeting Israel-linked vessels to show solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, who have been enduring relentless Israeli bombardment since October 7.
