ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam on Saturday strongly condemned the US House of Representatives Resolution on Pakistan’s elections, which called for a free and independent probe into rigging allegations.

“Among the wonders of modern ignorance is that a country prevents ceasefire resolution by veto and supports the genocide of the people of Gaza by providing all kinds of lethal weapons to the Zionist regime, but the Congress of which passes a resolution questioning the nationwide election in an independent member of the United Nations,” the envoy said in a Facebook post shared on Iranian Embassy’s account.

Aside from interfering in the domestic affairs of an independent member of the UN, Reza Amiri Moghadam maintained that such actions amount to extortion under the guise of supporting Democracy.

The US congressional resolution, passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 368-7, demanded a “full and independent investigation of claims of interference or irregularities” in Pakistan’s February 8 election.

In response, the National Assembly on Friday passed a resolution on Friday condemning the US Congress’s action as “contrary to facts” and interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

Pakistan Foreign Office on Saturday also strongly criticized the US’s House of Representatives Resolution and said that is an unsolicited interference in its internal affairs, which is neither welcomed nor acceptable.

During her regular media briefing in Islamabad today, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that resolution 901 reflects a flawed understanding of Pakistan’s political and electoral processes.
