ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Pakistan has stressed the need for multilateral cooperation to stop the impacts of sand and dust storms.

The embassy in a statement on the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms said climate changes and drought are hindering sustainable development goals and negatively impacting wider regional welfare.

“Multilateral cooperation is needed to stop the phenomenon,” the embassy in the statement said.

According to the United Nations, sand and dust storms have become more frequent and severe in recent years. The day is observed on July 12 each year to raise awareness and address the alarming increase in the frequency and severity of these natural disasters.

The UN General Assembly declared the period from 2025 to 2034 as the United Nations Decade on Combating Sand and Dust Storms. During the said period efforts would be made to combat destructive storms and mitigate their impact on communities worldwide.
