TEHRAN, Iran: Iran began hosting a major naval drill, “IMEX 2024,” in the Indian Ocean, featuring participation from Russia, Oman, and nine observing countries, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
The exercises aim to bolster “collective security” and foster multilateral cooperation to safeguard maritime routes and enhance humanitarian operations. The drills are seen as a demonstration of goodwill and efforts to promote peace and maritime security in the region.
Amid increasing regional tensions, particularly due to Israel’s war against Hamas and retaliatory attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea, Iran has expanded its military cooperation with Russia and China.
The IMEX 2024 exercises coincide with these developments, underscoring the broader geopolitical complexities.
These drills also reflect Iran’s strategy to strengthen alliances with major powers like Russia and China. Earlier this year, Iran conducted its fifth joint naval drill with Russia and China in the Gulf of Oman, reinforcing these partnerships.
