KAZAN: President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday strongly condemned the 15-nation United Nations Security Council for its failure to end the conflict in the Middle East.
“The fire of war is still raging in the Palestinian Gaza Strip and Lebanese cities,” Pezeshkian told leaders at the BRICS conference in Russia.
“And international institutions… topped by the United Nations Security Council — who are drivers of international peace and security — lack the necessary efficiency to extinguish the fire of this crisis.”
Pezeshkian slammed Israel for violating the red lines of different countries and starting a new wave of violence and terror.
Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, Iran has criticised the UN body for being ineffective and inactive in stopping the conflict in the Middle East.
Iran is also trying to establish ceasefires in both Gaza and Lebanon through diplomatic enjoyments.
The efforts are also aimed at stopping the war from spreading across the region after Israel threatened to attack Iran on October 1. Iran supports Hamas and Hezbollah, which are fighting Israel.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei also criticised the UN for turning “into a frustratingly dysfunctional platform” on social media platform.
He added the UN was sadly defeating its purpose as the United States’ unconditional support for Israel has encouraged Tal Aviv to expand its aggressions and atrocities across the region.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in October had blamed the US for hindering the UN Security Council efforts to end wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
The Security Council is comprised of five permanent members with veto powers China, France, Russia, the UK and the US and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for a period of two years.
