TEHRAN: Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni, Secretary Iran Drug Control Headquarters Monday said despite all the obstacles created by the US outrageous sanctions, the country seized 800 tons of illegal drugs.

Addressing the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, Brigadier Momeni said that Iran has the highest seizure of illegal drugs in the world with the confiscation of 800 tons.

He was of the view that cruel sanctions created numerous challenges for them in combating narcotics, but, he added, the Islamic Republic of Iran continues its counter-narcotic plans strongly.

According to world statistics, drug trafficking is expanding in the world as the Internet remains a tool for smugglers to increase drug trafficking, he said further.

Pointing out Afghanistan as the main country in harvesting opium in the world, Momeni noted that smuggling illegal drugs in the country has a 30% increase in 2022 compared to the same period in the year before. Iran remains one of the major transit routes for drug trafficking from Afghanistan.

Iran and Afghanistan share a 900-kilometer border, and this has historically served as the primary route for smuggling drugs to drug lords in Europe.
