TEHRAN: Iran’s foreign ministry summoned the Hungarian ambassador on Tuesday to condemn recent EU sanctions against the Islamic Republic. In a statement, Iran expressed its “strong objection,” asserting that sanctions are “illegal and coercive” and ultimately ineffective.

The 27-member EU imposed sanctions on Monday targeting prominent Iranian officials and entities, including airlines involved in transferring missiles and drones to Russia for its war in Ukraine. Seven entities, including Iran Air, and seven individuals, such as deputy defense minister Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari, were named in the sanctions.

Iran’s ministry characterized these sanctions as a violation of international law and defended its military cooperation as legitimate, asserting that it is aimed at protecting national security. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Iran’s support for Russia, stating it must cease.

Those sanctioned will face asset freezes and travel bans to the EU. Iran, meanwhile, has denied Western allegations regarding the transfer of military equipment to Moscow. Additionally, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that indirect nuclear talks with the U.S. through Oman have been suspended due to the volatile regional situation.
