ISLAMABAD/JEDDAH: Iran’s government has sentenced five people to death for killing a member of a paramilitary force related to the Irani Revolutionary Guard.

Five persons were sentenced to death Monday who were charged by Iran’s Revolutionary Court, along with eight others. Three boys were charged by Iran’s Criminal Court. Judiciary spokesman Masoud Setayeshi provided no evidence to support any of the accusations in an official report.

Identity of five not disclosed

Official authorities did not disclose the identities of all the 16. They said their sentences could be appealed, the longest being 25 years. The claimed killing occurred in Karaj, near Tehran, on November 12 when a group of men attacked Ajamian with knives and stones during the protests. The punishments come amid the months of anti-government demonstrations that Iran’s guards have violently suppressed.
