MUSCAT: Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s top diplomat, arrived in Oman on Wednesday as part of his Gulf tour, following discussions in Doha with Qatari and European Union officials regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The Iranian diplomatic mission also includes visits to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

During his time in Oman, Amir-Abdollahian held talks with Sultan bin Mohammed al Numani, Minister of Oman’s Royal Office, focusing on bilateral relations and exploring various areas of cooperation, as reported by the official Oman News Agency.

Last week, Iran revealed that it had been engaging in indirect negotiations with the United States through Oman, with nuclear issues, US sanctions, and detainees on the agenda. In continuation of these efforts, Iran’s nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, met with diplomats from three European countries in Abu Dhabi to discuss several matters, including Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran Nuclear Deal

The 2015 landmark deal between Iran and world powers aimed to prevent Tehran from secretly developing a nuclear bomb—a goal consistently denied by the Islamic republic. However, the United States, under former President Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, prompting Iran to gradually reduce its commitments, including an increase in uranium enrichment.

The Biden administration has sought to revive the deal, but progress has been hampered by intermittent talks since 2021. Recent reports suggesting that Iran and the US were close to reaching an interim agreement to replace the 2015 accord have been denied by both sides.

During his visit to Doha, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, met with Enrique Mora, the European Union’s Iran nuclear talks coordinator. Bagheri described the meeting as serious and constructive, stating that discussions encompassed various topics, including negotiations to lift sanctions.

Amir-Abdollahian also held discussions with his Qatari counterpart, addressing developments in the nuclear agreement, according to the official Qatar News Agency.
