ISLAMABAD: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has alluded to the possible involvement of third countries in the increasing terrorism along the Iran-Pakistan border.
During a joint Press conference with Pakistan’s caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani in Islamabad, both ministers emphasized their commitment to respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aiming to strengthen security cooperation and mend ties after recent missile strikes.
Amir-Abdollahian expressed concerns about terrorists operating in the common border regions, suggesting that they receive support from external actors. He highlighted the terrorists’ lack of interest in actions that benefit the governments and nations of both Pakistan and Iran. The Iranian FM stated that there have never been territorial differences or wars between the two nations, emphasizing a historical understanding.
Jilani echoed the sentiment of mutual respect, emphasizing that Pakistan and Iran share a commitment to combating terrorism collectively. Both countries agreed to adopt collaborative approaches, leveraging existing institutional mechanisms to address the common challenge of terrorism. Jilani stressed the importance of economic development in border areas, prioritizing shared prosperity.
The Pakistani Foreign Minister appreciated Amir-Abdollahian’s prompt visit, emphasizing the deep commitment to strengthening fraternal ties. He described the relationship as rooted in shared religion, history, culture, and geography. The discussions between the two ministers revealed convergences on various mutual interests, recognizing the imperative role of the Pakistan-Iran relationship in regional stability.
Amir-Abdollahian assured that the people of Iran and Pakistan are considered one nation, emphasizing the priority of Pakistan’s security. Both ministers acknowledged the significance of their close relationship for the prosperity and development of their people and the stability of the region.
Tensions between Iran and Pakistan escalated recently due to missile strikes, prompting diplomatic actions such as the recall of ambassadors. However, swift efforts were made to de-escalate, with envoys returning to their posts and Amir-Abdollahian’s invitation for talks.
