TEHRAN: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will travel to China within days for a three-day visit to strengthen economic cooperation, Iran’s state media reported on Sunday.

Ebrahim Raisi will set out for Beijing on Monday evening in response to an official invitation by his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the IRNA news agency reported.

Both leaders met for the first time last September in Uzbekistan at a summit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, where the Iranian president called for expanded ties.

Raisi is expected to hold one-on-one talks with Xi on his upcoming trip, and delegations from both countries are due to sign “cooperation documents,” according to IRNA.

The agency added that Raisi would also participate in meetings with Chinese business people and Iranians living in the country.

Raisi’s visit to strengthen Iran-China ties

China and Iran have strong economic ties, especially in energy, transit, agriculture, investment, and trade.

Both countries signed a 25-year “strategic cooperation agreement in 2021,” which included “political, strategic, and economic” components.

IRNA said that China is Iran’s largest trade partner, citing the 10-month statistics of Iranian customs authorities.

Iran’s exports to China stood at $12.6 billion, while it imported $12.7 billion worth of goods from China.
