TEHRAN: The Iranian Embassy complex in the Syrian capital Damascus has reportedly been attacked and damaged by some armed elements following the fall of the government of Bashar al-Assad.
Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that released footage showed damage caused to the building and property of the Iranian embassy in the capital Damascus. Reportedly Iranian diplomats left Damascus embassy before ‘assault’.
The incident came after the Syrian army command declared that President Bashar al-Assad’s government had fallen as armed groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) entered the capital Damascus.
The army command issued the statement early on Sunday after reports of the armed groups’ entrance into Damascus and Assad’s departure from the city.
As per reports a Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was reported to have been taken by militants.

Meanwhile, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said he was ready to hand over the administration of the Arab country to a transitional government.
Earlier, the Syrian army said it was increasing its deployments around Damascus and in the south to strengthen its defence lines as panic spread that militates were drawing close.
Meanwhile, Iraqi embassy staff left Damascus on Sunday for neighbouring Lebanon, a diplomatic source told AFP, after Syrian armed groups declared the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
