TEHRAN, Iran: Iran’s newly appointed foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has called for renewed dialogue with the European Union (EU) to address and resolve ongoing bilateral issues.

In a statement released after a phone call with Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, Araghchi emphasized Iran’s willingness to enhance relations with the EU, provided they are based on mutual respect.

Relations between Iran and the EU have deteriorated in recent years, primarily due to the EU’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities, its support for Hamas, involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine, and human rights violations.

Araghchi acknowledged these challenges, suggesting that improved relations would require open dialogue and a reassessment of the EU’s policies toward Iran.

Borrell, in his social media comments, highlighted the importance of this “critical dialogue” in reducing regional tensions. He underscored the need for de-escalation, particularly concerning military cooperation between Iran and Russia, and the broader issue of nuclear non-proliferation. Borrell’s engagement reflects the EU’s ongoing interest in addressing these complex issues through diplomatic channels.

Araghchi’s appointment and his willingness to engage with the West mark a significant moment for Iran’s foreign policy. Known for his role as chief nuclear negotiator in the 2015 agreement that curbed Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, Araghchi’s experience and openness could be crucial in navigating the strained relations.

The 2015 nuclear deal, which was undermined by former US President Donald Trump in 2018, has yet to be revived despite efforts since 2022. Araghchi’s call for dialogue signals Iran’s interest in re-engaging with the international community, although significant challenges remain.
