BAGHDAD: Iraq has strongly condemned the US strikes against armed groups on its territory terming it as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

General Yehia Rasool, a spokesman for Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani, in a statement warned of disastrous consequences of such attacks for the country and beyond.

He said Friday’s strikes in western Iraq near the Syrian border are violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and will bring terrible consequences for the security and stability of Iraq and the entire region.

The US military has launched a series of air strikes against targets in Syria and Iraq as retaliation for the recent deaths of three soldiers at a remote US base along Jordan- Syria border.

The military on Friday said American forces conducted air strikes on Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Tehran-affiliated militia groups, hitting more than 85 targets in Iraq and Syria.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that he had decided how to respond to a drone attack that killed US service members in Jordan.

The Syrian government also confirmed the US air strikes, citing multiple explosions in Deir Ezzor and a subsequent power disruption, terming them as American aggression.

According to Iran’s official media Tehran’s permanent mission to the UN warned that the country would respond decisively to any attack on its territory, interests or nationals outside its borders.
