BAGHDAD: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday discussed enhancing security cooperation to combat terrorist threats and other security challenges.

According to Iraqi media, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani telephoned the Syrian President and discussed bilateral relations and strategies to bolster cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

Moreover, they addressed the imperative of security collaboration to counter the persistent dangers posed by remnants of terrorist groups and other security challenges.

Both sides also discussed the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, underscoring the necessity for a unified Islamic and international approach to alleviate the plight of the Palestinian people.

Despite Iraq’s victory over the Islamic State in 2017, remnants of the group persistently infiltrate Iraqi urban centers, deserts, and rugged terrains along the approximately 600 km-long border with Syria.
