IRC Celebrates World Environment Day in Pakistan, Focusing on Sustainable Consumption and Production

ISLAMABAD: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Pakistan organized a dynamic event to mark World Environment Day, centered around the theme “Produce, Consume, and Dispose of Plastic.” This annual global platform serves as a call to action for environmental preservation and unity.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the urgency of adopting sustainable consumption and production patterns to mitigate the adverse effects on food security, marine life, and the ecology of Pakistan.

Distinguished attendees, including government representatives, donor agencies, environmental and academic experts, and members of international development organizations, engaged in insightful discussions to explore solutions for a greener and more sustainable future. Notably, Mr. Sarmad Iqbal, Head of Policy Advocacy at IRC, provided an overview of Pakistan’s environmental challenges and the legal framework for collective action.

Ms. Romina Khurshid, Head of the SDG Unit and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, graced the event as the Guest of Honor. She emphasized the critical role of sustainable consumption and production in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), urging introspection on consumption patterns and social disparities.

World Environment Day in Pakistan

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion moderated by renowned Ecologist Mr. Rafi Ul Haq. Esteemed speakers, including experts from SDPI, the Ministry of Water Resources, NUST, ARID University, and the Coastal and Deltaic Center, delved into topics such as inclusive and resilient settlements, academia’s role, sustainable consumption and production patterns, and ecosystem conservation. The panel discussion was followed by an engaging Q&A session, enabling participants to interact with the experts.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Shabnam Baloch, Country Director of IRC, expressed the significance of the event’s discussions in fostering sustained advocacy for climate change. She pledged to continue exploring creative and innovative solutions for environmentally sustainable emergency responses and collaborations among stakeholders. Together, these efforts aim to make a tangible difference in promoting sustainable practices and creating a greener and more sustainable Pakistan.
