ISLAMABAD: Islamabad’s District and Sessions court on Tuesday rejected the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) plea for an early hearing of the Toshakhana case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.
District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal dismissed the ECP plea and maintained that the hearing would he held on April 29, as was announced earlier. Earlier, Khawaja Haris representing PTI chairman Imran Khan questioned the urgency on the part of the ECP in the case. He said that they were preparing their case keeping in view the April 29 date for the next hearing and added the ECP request in this regard seems an attempt to target his client.
Khawaja Haris also told the court that former prime minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani’s son Moosa Gilani could not be indicted in a similar case during a one-year time and added why the electoral body wants the case against Imran Khan to be fixed before the early schedule. The ECP had approached the court for early hearing in the case.
Subsequently, the court summoned the PTI chief on the ECP plea seeking an immediate hearing of the Toshakhana case. The former premier was asked to appear before the court on April 11 at 8:30 in the morning, according to the summon as it added in case of non-appearance, the law will take its course.
The ECP had disqualified ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan from holding public office for 5 years in the Toshakhana reference and sent the case to the district and sessions judge for criminal proceedings against him.
