ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police on Monday arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, Member of National Assembly (MNA) Sher Afzal Marwat, and MNA Shoaib Shaheen outside Parliament House.
According to local media, a large number of police personnel were present outside the Parliament House to arrest the PTI lawmakers. As PTI leaders exited the building, police took positions and swiftly moved to arrest Marwat, Shaheen and Gohar.
Reportedly a scuffle broke out between Marwat’s supporters and the police during the arrest. However, police managed to arrest the MNA and also seized his vehicle before leaving the scene.
Though Sher Afzal Marwat was taken into custody forcefully, another PTI leader, Aamir Dogar, left the Parliament House without any problem.
As per reports Marwat was arrested because of legal violations committed during last night’s rally.
The violations include breaching commitments, disrupting the agreed route, attacking Islamabad police, exceeding permitted timings, and delivering anti-state speeches.
After Marwat’s arrest, several PTI leaders and parliamentarians decided to stay inside the Parliament building to avoid arrest.
The development took place after Islamabad police filed three cases against the PTI leadership for failing to conclude last night’s rally on time.
The cases were registered under the Public Order and Peace Act, after the PTI’s public gathering at Islamabad’s Sangjani. The first case was registered at Sangjani Police Station for the rally exceeding its allotted time limit.
A second case was filed at Sumbal Police Station for violating the approved route by leading convoys through Srinagar Highway and Sadaat Colony.
The third case, registered at Noon Police Station, pertains to stone-pelting on law enforcement officials, including the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Safe City and other officials.
