Ismail Haniyeh to be Buried in Doha Today

DOHA:  Qatar is to hold funeral prayer later today for Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh following his assassination in Iran’s capital Tehran in an attack blamed on Israel. According to Al-Jazeera Ismail Haniyeh had resided in Doha along with other members of the Hamas political office.

AFP reported that Ismail Haniyeh will be buried at a cemetery in Lusail, Doha, after funeral prayers at the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque – Qatar’s largest.  Hamas has announced that “Arab and Islamic leaders” and representatives of other Palestinian factions and members of the public would attend the events.  Thousands of mourners paid their respects to Haniyeh at a public funeral ceremony in Tehran on Thursday. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers in Theran.

Pakistan, Turkey Announce a Day of mourning to Express Solidarity with Palestinians

Pakistan and Turkey have announced a day of mourning today in honour of Ismail Haniyeh and to express solidarity with the people of Palestine, while Hamas has called for a “day of furious rage” to coincide with the burial of their leader.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared August 2 as a day of mourning over the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh and expressed complete solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The premier denounced the extraterritorial killing, which he described as a blatant breach of international law, and said that it had drawn widespread condemnation from Pakistan and other nations, including Turkiye, Russia, Iran, China, and Malaysia.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday said that Israel had turned “rogue” state with its “assassination” of the Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and needed to be stopped.

In a news conference, Safadi condemned the killing, asserting that it undermined ongoing talks for a ceasefire and a hostage release deal in Gaza.
