BEIRUT: The Israeli military has demolished several houses in Lebanon’s border villages, Lebanese state media reported on Saturday, as Israel announced the use of 400 tonnes of explosives to destroy a tunnel.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), Israeli forces targeted homes in the village of Adaisseh, launching a series of explosions that echoed across the south and sent smoke billowing from border regions.
Similar incidents were reported in the nearby village of Kfar Kila, where “large explosions” were also heard, further stoking concerns of escalating violence in the area.
Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said the Israeli army used 400 tonnes of explosives to demolish an underground tunnel in southern Lebanon. The tunnel, which spanned over 1.5 kilometers (approximately a mile), was described by the Israeli military as a “strategic underground facility.”
The conflict, which erupted into full-scale war on September 23, has led to devastating impacts on Lebanon. The Lebanese health ministry said that at least 1,615 people have died in Lebanon as a result of the Israeli attacks, though the true number is likely higher due to limited data access in the affected regions.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that at least 1.3 million people have been displaced by the conflict, with over 800,000 people remaining inside Lebanon while around 500,000, mostly Syrian refugees, have fled to Syria.
In recent days, Israeli media broadcasts have shown footage of Israeli troops detonating buildings in south Lebanon. Israel’s Channel 12 aired video footage on Friday showing a reporter embedded with troops detonating a building in the village of Aita al-Shaab.
