TEL AVIV: Israel on Sunday formally opposed unilateral recognition of the state of Palestine saying that any such agreement should be reached through direct talks.

According to a statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu brought the decision for voting in the Cabinet, which approved the measure unanimously.

Netanyahu said that the move comes at the start of the weekly meeting after reports in the international community about an attempt to recognize the Palestinian state.

Efforts to implement a two-state solution, an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza alongside Israel have been stopped since 2014.

US President Joe Biden has been trying to achieve an even broader deal in the Middle East, that would include some Arab states as well as the creation of a Palestinian state.

According to Netanyahu’s office, the formal Israeli statement, shows the fact that Israel dismisses outright international dictates regarding a permanent agreement with the Palestinians.

It said any deal, should be reached, only through direct talks between the sides, without any preconditions.

The statement said that Israel will continue to oppose the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

Meanwhile the conflict in Gaza which began on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of at least 28,858 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
