Israel Releases 39 Palestinian Prisoners in First Phase of Ceasefire Deal with Hamas

RAMALLAH: The first group of Palestinian prisoners – primarily women and children – have been released from Israeli jails under the four-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The released 39 Palestinian prisoners, including 24 women and 15 minors, who were detained in Israeli prisons.

Following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, the Israeli Prison Service released the first batch of Palestinian prisoners on Friday. A total of 39 Palestinian prisoners, including 24 women and 15 minors, were set free and transferred to the Beitunia checkpoint near Ramallah.

This release marks the initial phase of a broader agreement, which requires the release of 150 Palestinian prisoners, predominantly women and children, over a four-day period. In return, 50 Israeli hostages held by Hamas will be released gradually.

The four-day humanitarian pause in Gaza, agreed upon by both the Israeli army and Hamas, came into effect on Friday morning. This temporary cessation of hostilities is aimed at facilitating the exchange of prisoners and providing humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

The conflict in Gaza has taken a devastating toll, with over 14,854 Palestinians, including 6,150 children and more than 4,000 women, reported dead due to the relentless air and ground attacks by Israel, according to health authorities in the enclave.
