JERUSALEM: Israel’s foreign ministry announced on Monday a decision to terminate consular services for Palestinians through the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem effective June 1.

The ministry clarified in a statement that while Spain’s consulate in Jerusalem is permitted to offer consular assistance to residents within its consular district, it is not authorized to extend its services to individuals residing in the Palestinian Authority.

The move reflects Israel’s diplomatic stance in response to Madrid’s decision to formally acknowledge the existence of a Palestinian state. By restricting consular activities, Israel aims to assert its sovereignty over Jerusalem and maintain control over diplomatic engagements within the region. The decision underscores the heightened tensions between Israel and Spain, signaling a shift in bilateral relations with potential ramifications for future diplomatic initiatives.
