Israel Spy Chief, Gaza Mediators to Meet in Rome

CAIRO: US and Qatari mediators are to meet with Israeli negotiators in Rome Sunday in the latest push for a Gaza ceasefire, Egyptian media reported.

Al-Qahera news reported that a four-way meeting between American, Qatari and Egyptian mediators in the presence of Israel’s spy chief will be held in Rome, Italy on Sunday to reach an agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza.

Egypt, along with the United States and Qatar, has been involved in months of mediation efforts to end the Hamas- Israel conflict raging in Gaza for more than 9 months. The proposed ceasefire deal would be linked to the release of captives held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.

Similarly, the US media reported that CIA Director Bill Burns is likely to hold talks on the issue in Rome on Sunday with Qatari, Egyptian and Israeli officials.  Recent mediation efforts have given mor focus on a framework which President Biden presented in late May, billing it an Israeli recommendation.  Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee in the US presidential race, said after the meeting with Israeli Prime Minister she would not be “silent” on the suffering in the Gaza Strand that it was time to end the “devastating” conflict.

Israel launched a brutal campaign against Gaza, killing around 39,175 people including women and children in the territory, according to Gaza health ministry.
