DAMASCUS: The Syrian defence ministry said that Israel conducted air strikes near Damascus on Saturday. In a statement, the defence ministry said at about 1035 GMT today, the Israeli military conducted an airstrike from the occupied Syrian Golan, hitting some points close the city of Damascus, reporting no casualties. Earlier, Syrian official media also reported about the Israeli strike near Damascus.
Israel had carried out hundreds of airstrikes on its northern neighbour country since Syria’s civil war started in 2011, mostly targeting several fighters and Syrian military positions. But Israel has increased strikes since its war with Hamas, started in October.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said that Israel struck ” targets” in south of Damascus. Ambulances and rescue workers had rushed to the site of the shelling, said the head of the UK-based monitor, which also runs a network in Syria.

Israeli strikes on November 26 rendered Damascus airport unworkable just hours following flights restarted after a similar strike the month before. Aleppo and Damascus airports were both put out of service after Israeli airstrikes on October 12 and 22.
