LONDON: The diplomatic representatives of Israel and Palestine in the United Kingdom have expressed opposing perspectives on the viability of a two-state solution, further highlighting the complexities of the longstanding conflict.
Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, affirmed the Palestinian commitment to negotiations based on a two-state solution. Speaking to Sky News, Zomlot emphasized that the Palestine Liberation Organization remains the representative entity of the Palestinian people and is dedicated to international resolutions that advocate for a two-state solution and the end of Israeli occupation. He added that when Israel is ready, the Palestinian people are equipped with sufficient institutions to engage in negotiations.
In contrast, Israel’s Ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, declared her country’s categorical rejection of any possibility of a two-state solution after the conclusion of the conflict in Gaza. This statement follows Israel’s full-scale invasion of Gaza, resulting in a humanitarian crisis and a significant loss of Palestinian lives.
Israeli Actions Erode Hopes for Political Solution
Zomlot responded to questions about growing support for Hamas in the Occupied Territories, stating that decades of Israeli actions had eroded hope for a political solution. He cited a history of land appropriation, displacement, and house demolitions as contributing factors, expressing a lack of surprise at Hotovely’s rejection of a two-state solution.
The ongoing conflict has intensified tensions, with Israel’s military actions raising concerns globally. The situation has escalated into a humanitarian crisis, with over 19,000 Palestinians reported killed as a result of the full-scale invasion of Gaza.
