JERUSALEM: Israeli army killed at least three Palestinians in the West Bank city of Jenin overnight, in a strike that locals said involved a missile fired from the air and started a gunbattle that continued into Monday morning.
The gunfire and explosives heard across the city hours after the attack and drones were seen flying in the area. The Jenin Brigades – a militant group in the city’s refugee camp— said it was engaging Israeli military.
Khaled Alahmad, a Palestinian ambulance driver, said that the fight in the refugee camp is a real war. There were attacks on the refugee camp and drivers were driving ambulances full of wounded citizens, Arab News reported.
Israel said its armed forces targeted a building that served as a command centre for Jenin Brigades’ fighters from the, in what it termed a large-scale counterterrorism effort in the area.
Six drones could be seen circling over the city. The army declined to specify whether Monday’s operations included a drone strike, which hadn’t been seen in the West Bank for more than 15 years until a strike killed three militant gunmen near Jenin last month.
