ISLAMABAD/BEIRUT: The Syrian army said that the Israeli military fired missiles toward the Damascus international airport on Monday, putting it out of service, killing two soldiers, and injuring two others.

Attack on Damascus international airport

According to the Associated Press (AP), the attack, the second attack in seven months, caused material damage in a nearby area, the Syrian army said.

An opposition war monitor reported the- latest Israel strike hit the facility and an arms depot close to the facility south of Damascus.

A Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that four people had been killed in the strike.

In the past, Israeli hit airports and ports inside Syria in an apparent attempt to prevent weapon shipments from Iran to militant groups backed by Tehran, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

On June 10, 2022, Israeli army air strikes that struck the Damascus international airport caused substantial damage to infrastructure, buildings, and runways. The facility was reopened two weeks later after repairs.

Israel says that the Iranian presence on its northern frontier was a red line that justifies its strikes on facilities and weapons inside Syria.
