Jalil Abbas Jilani Takes Charge as Caretaker Foreign Minister

ISLAMABAD: The seasoned ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani assumes charge as the caretaker foreign minister of Pakistan with a pledge to promote friendly relations with countries like China, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and South Asian countries.

Jilani and the other cabinet members were administered oath as interim ministers by President Dr. Arif Alvi. The newly-appointed foreign minister Jilani has vast experience in international affairs and has also held the position of foreign secretary. He served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Belgium, the US, the EU, Australia, and Luxembourg as well as held the position of foreign secretary from 2012 to 2013, according to the spokesperson for the foreign office.

After taking the oath, Jilani said that the primary goal of foreign policy was to advance the country’s interests. He declared that the caretaker government would promote friendly relations with countries like China, the US, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and South Asian governments, among others, and serve the nation’s interests through national consensus.

Foreign minister keen to further consolidate ties with China

Considering China as a strategic partner with excellent economic cooperation, he said that Pakistan would fortify its ties with the country further.

Jilani asserted that the success of the Afghan government was also crucial in combating terrorism.
