TOKYO: Japan on Monday issued its highest alert amid heavy rains, which killed one person while transport was disrupted in many areas.
The Meteorological Agency of Japan warned of landslides and floods in Oita and Fukuoka provinces in southwestern Japan.
In an emergency call issued in pre-dawn at around 3:40 a.m. local time (1840GMT), the agency urged residents to fully implement safety precautions to protect themselves.
The government in Fukuoka province reported the death of one woman because of heavy rains, according to Anadolu Agency.
Rail officials suspended bullet train services in Kumamoto, Hiroshima, and Hakata stations as heavy rains lashed the cities, inundating roads and tracks.
Japan’s Met Department Prediction
Japan’s Met Department on Sunday warned of flood and landslides in Yamaguchi and adjoining provinces, with heavy rainfall likely from western and eastern regions through early next week.
Meteorologists predicted rains amounts of up to two hundred mm in the northern Kyushu region, up to one hundred mm in the Chugoku region of western Japan, and up to eighty mm in the Hokuriku region of central Japan within the twenty-four-hour period leading up to Tuesday.
