TOKYO: In a bid to curb the disruptive behavior of tourists, Japanese authorities are set to construct a massive black barrier obscuring the iconic view of Mount Fuji from a popular photo spot. The mesh net, measuring 2.5 meters in height and 20 meters in length, aims to address the littering and traffic violations caused by an influx of poorly behaved foreign visitors.
Fujikawaguchiko town officials expressed regret over the necessity of such measures, attributing the decision to the disregard for rules exhibited by some tourists. This move echoes growing concerns over overtourism in Japan, exemplified by recent actions taken in Kyoto’s geisha district to restrict access to private alleys.
The picturesque backdrop of Mount Fuji, often captured behind a ubiquitous Lawson convenience store, has drawn droves of tourists eager to snap photos deemed quintessentially Japanese. However, the surge in visitors has led to overcrowding and unauthorized parking, prompting the installation of the barrier as a last resort.
